The Ministry of Health has announced the immediate closure of Omnicare Medical Limited, a facility operating under the name “Body by Design” in Nairobi, following the tragic death of Ms. Lucy Wambui. Ms. Wambui passed away after undergoing a plastic surgery procedure at the facility. In response to the incident, the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) took action. They conducted a thorough investigation. The investigation uncovered severe non-compliance with medical standards.
Omnicare Medical Limited did not meet the required safety and medical standards. The investigation revealed violations of patient safety regulations. These regulations are essential for safeguarding the health and well-being of patients. Specifically, the facility failed to meet guidelines stipulated under Sections 4 and 15 of the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Act (Cap 253).
The KMPDC has ordered the facility’s immediate closure. They aim to prevent further risk to public health. According to the Ministry, Omnicare Medical Limited will remain shut until corrective actions are taken to ensure compliance with all necessary patient safety standards.
In addition, the Ministry stated that a comprehensive investigation is ongoing to determine the accountability of the institution and the medical staff involved in Ms. Wambui’s treatment. The Council is examining the extent of negligence. It will take appropriate actions to enforce accountability. The Council also aims to prevent future cases of malpractice.
The State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards, through the KMPDC, reiterated its commitment to enforcing high healthcare standards across Kenya. It assured the public that it would continue monitoring healthcare facilities to uphold patient safety. The Ministry further pledged to provide updates as new information on the investigation becomes available.
