The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has officially summoned impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua following alarming claims he made regarding attempted assassination plots against him. Gachagua’s assertions, made during a press conference on October 20, have raised serious concerns within law enforcement.
In a shocking revelation, Gachagua stated that he survived two separate assassination attempts. He described a harrowing incident on August 30 in Kisumu, where he alleged that undercover security agents had infiltrated his room and attempted to poison his food. “We detected it and were able to escape the scheme. I was supposed to be killed by food poisoning,” he remarked.
Gachagua further alleged that on September 3, another group from the National Intelligence Service attempted a similar scheme while he was in Nyeri, aiming to poison food intended for him and members of the Kikuyu council of elders.
The DCI responded promptly to Gachagua’s claims, stating, “These are serious allegations emanating from a person of your stature and cannot be taken lightly.” The agency has scheduled a meeting with Gachagua at their headquarters along Kiambu Road to record his statement, emphasizing the importance of his cooperation in their investigation.
The former Deputy President made these statements after being discharged from Karen Hospital, where he had been admitted due to severe chest pains. His medical condition had previously prevented him from undergoing cross-examination in the Senate regarding his impeachment.
In a separate but related political development, the Senate upheld Gachagua’s impeachment, prompting him to seek legal redress in court. The court has since granted him a temporary reprieve by halting his replacement. Following Gachagua’s ouster, President William Ruto nominated Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as the new Deputy President, a decision that was swiftly approved by the National Assembly in a special sitting.
